Specialised Clinics
The following clinics run throughout the week. Please telephone 0118 933 2436 (option 2) to make the appropriate appointment.
Health Check
The health check clinics are run to promote better health for all our patients. They will provide a general health screening service looking particularly at risk factors for heart disease and strokes, with specific assessment and advice on healthy eating, exercise and stopping smoking.
Asthma
The asthma clinic aims to provide the best symptom control and education for our asthmatic patients by offering a yearly check-up for all asthmatics on regular medication.
Diabetes
Diabetic patients registered at Mortimer are encouraged to attend annually for a full check-up and assessment. Advice and support is offered to diabetic patients and anybody who suspects they might have symptoms of diabetes, at any time.
Hypertension and Coronary Heart Disease
We do not currently offer this service at the Surgery.
The Hypertension and Coronary Heart Disease Clinics offer an annual check-up for all patients to ensure that they are receiving the maximum benefit from their medication and also to offer self help advice on maintaining health.
Cervical Smears
You will be reminded when your cervical smear is due. Cervical smear appointments are available with either Dr French or our Practice Nurses.
Menopause Clinic (Osteoporosis Prevention)
We do not currently offer this service at the Surgery.
Any woman aged 40+ can be seen for advice and explanation of menopausal problems. Self-help, dietary advice and medication are discussed. We aim to improve quality of life and general health in the future for this age group.
Contraceptive Services
Contraceptive advice and contraceptives are provided by all the Doctors and also by the Family Planning Nurses. Everyone (including under 16 year olds) will be treated confidentially. All contraceptive methods, including emergency contraception, are provided free of charge.
Emergency Contraception
Known as the 'morning after pill' emergency contraception is available at our surgery from either our doctors or family planning nurses. It can be effective if taken within 72 hours of having unprotected intercourse or a condom failure. The earlier it is taken the more effective it is likely to be.
If, however, you are unable to attend Mortimer Surgery, emergency contraception can be purchased from selected pharmacies within the area.
However, if more than 72 hours have elapsed, and you are within day 19 of your cycle, then please make an appointment with your doctor for further advice.
Travel Clinic
We can offer up-to-date and comprehensive information for all travellers via a computer link to one of the largest tropical disease hospitals in this country. We stock a comprehensive range of vaccinations and are a Yellow Fever centre.
We have information sheets for travellers with specific needs such as diabetes, the elderly, those travelling with children or having a fear of flying or can be found online at www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk.
As soon as you have booked your holiday, please collect a Travel Assessment form from Reception - ideally at least 6 weeks prior to travel. After review of the form a Nurse will contact you to discuss vaccines and arrange an appointment.
Mammography
Our female patients aged between 50 and 70 are offered an appointment every three years to attend the breast Screening Centre on the 1st floor of Hanover House, 202 Kings Road, Reading (telephone number 0118 9582956) or in the Mobile Screening Unit. If you have any queries regarding this service, please contact the Breast Screening Centre direct.
